As the season of Big Brother came to an end and the season of Survivor began, I started thinking about how these two shows are very similar. They are both socially based shows where alliances are made and people are voted off of the show. Basically they are the same show with a few differences:
*Survivor takes place in remote locations where contestants have the opportunity to win challenges that provide awards. Big Brother takes place in a beautiful home where contestants have the opportunity to win challenges that keep you from getting punishments.
*Survivor is pre-recorded and edited while Big Brother takes place over a longer period of time with live weekly updates.
*Survivor challenges are more physical while Big Brother challenges tend to be messier.
*On Big Brother, people are given different powers like Head of Household and Power of Veto while Survivor has hidden immunity idols. (Though one could argue this makes the shows more similar than different because they each provide contestants with the ability to be safe from votes.)
These are the biggest differences I have noticed. There are other smaller differences of course (like how contestants are voted off: on Survivor you can vote for anyone while on Big Brother you have to choose between the two nominees), but the basic concept of the shows are the same - keep from getting voted off while not making too many enemies.
I love both shows. I think the differences are what make the two shows what they are. If they were too similar, why would you need both? However, the general concept is what is loved by America and that is why both shows seem to just keep going and going.
