In preschool last week, the firefighters came to teach the children about fire safety. One of the things they taught, that you were probably taught too when you were a child, is that if there is a fire, leave your pets behind because a pet can be replaced but you can't be replaced. As they were saying that, I thought about my little puppy Lily. And I realized it is complete bunk to say a pet can be replaced. Lily CANNOT be replaced. Sure, I could always get a new dog, but it wouldn't be Lily! If you can replace a dog, you can replace a child too. If your child died in a fire you could always have another child. But would that replace your child?? NO. I could get another dog, but it wouldn't be a replacement!!! It actually angered me to hear that Lily could be replaced. My point - dogs are not replaceable. You can get another one, but it won't be the same. (Just like getting another child does not replace a lost one.)
I grew up HATING dogs. I was terrified of them and even hated going trick-or-treating because of the dogs that would greet me at the door. As I grew up, I gradually got used to them, but never really fully got over my fear - until I got my own puppy. I love her so so so much. I am not scared of her; he kisses don't creep me out; I love her jumping on me; I even like her play bites. I grew up not understanding why people were so sad when their dog died; it's just a dumb dog. But now that I have my own dog, I get it.
I'm still not a dog person. I'm not too fond of my sister-in-laws dog jumping on me and licking my face. But I at least now understand that a dog really is a part of the family. Lily is my baby. I am her mom. I don't have a child of my own to love yet, but I love Lily like she is my child. If having a dog shows just a small amount of how much I will love my children, the love a mother has for a child must be incredibly strong!!!!
I love my dog!!!!!!
