Continuing Education Workshops

Being a Elementary Education graduate from BYU, I received some materials containing information about summer education courses. Most of them are 1-2 credit classes throughout the summer for 2-5 days. They look like very informative, fun classes for teachers to continue their learning (plus it gets them credits towards licence renewal, etc). I was looking at the various classes offered and they looked so neat. I went online and found even more conferences that looked great too. But guess what! The cheapest one has a $200 tuition fee. Now, for college credits, that's really not so bad. But since I am not currently teaching (or working at all for that matter), it seems silly for me to spend money on stuff that likely won't be beneficial to a career. (Who knows, maybe someday I'll go back to teaching and those credits might help, but they might not help either if they aren't current enough.) I'm really only interested in the courses because I like to learn. And $200 (or $400 - or more!) sounds like a lot to spend on pleasure. So...........

I have decided I am going to create my own little summer conference. Just for me. I'm not sure exactly how it will work yet. Obviously I won't have speakers to listen to. But I'm sure I can come up with some sort of "conference" for myself that would be fun and educational without breaking the bank. I'm sure it will involve reading children's books. Maybe a field trip to somewhere. Maybe writing some of my own stuff. Who knows. I'll figure it out later. But I'm going to make it semi-structured and conference-like to "force" me to do it (and not take TV breaks, etc). I'm really excited. Not only do I get to continue my education (in a semi-formal way), but I get to design what I want to learn! I love designing stuff!!!
